A true high-end perfume, an absolute is the most precious oil of the plant raw material. Absolutes are highly concentrated, fragrant natural plant extracts, obtained from a plant by the extractive action of an organic solvent. Extraction begins with maceration (from the Latin macerare “to soak”) of the plant to obtain what is known as a concentrate. This solid concentrate is then melted, dissolved in alcohol, insoluble waxes are removed, while pigments and essences are retained. The final step is to separate the alcohol from the scented substance: the result is an absolute - a dense, precious, highly concentrated liquid.
