1999 was a hot but dry year, marked by comfortable yields. The wines are very tasty, opened up quite quickly and still give a lot of pleasure.
TEMPERATURES AND RAINFALL
The winter of 1999 was mild with rainfall close to the average values recorded. 1999 was a warm year, which induced an early phenological cycle. Precipitation was close to seasonal normals during the summer, with a very even distribution of rainfall. The month of September was hot and rainy.
In 1999, the growing cycle followed the average dates observed since 1996. Mid-ripening took place on August 2 for the Merlot grape variety and August 8 for the Cabernet Franc grape variety. Little difference was noted between the different plots of the same grape variety. The veraison progressed very quickly, which allowed us to predict a good homogeneity in terms of maturity. Growth was stopped very late. The Merlot was harvested at Cheval Blanc between September 14 and 21, for the most part before the rains of September 19. The Cabernet Franc was harvested from September 22 to 28.
GRAPE MATURITY AND YIELD
Despite a relatively rainy summer, the quality potential was very good. The concentration of phenolic compounds was high, especially when the weight of the berries was taken into account, which was surprisingly low given the low water stress that the vines encountered during the summer. The balance between sugar content and acidity was very interesting for the Merlot grape variety. The Cabernet Franc was marked by a lack of ripeness which manifested itself in medium-low potential degrees but no herbaceous flavor was noted on these lots.
The 1999 vintage presents itself with a very beautiful synergy between concentrated but somewhat austere Merlot and elegant and very aromatic Cabernet Franc. The Cheval Blanc blend contains 61% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet-Sauvignon.
A hot year, but without much drought, 1999 is a vintage with comfortable yields that represents a very beautiful synergy between Merlot and Cabernet Franc and gives a lot of pleasure. The deep robe is of a black heart hemmed with tiled hues sign of an evolution in accordance with its age. The nose is concentrated, with very ripe black fruit and crème de cassis, with notes of orange chocolate, violet and liquorice. The wood is very harmonious with empyreumatic notes of roasted almonds. The aromas coming from the evolution are also sensitive and perfectly clear and precise: truffle, undergrowth aromas and fruit notes in brandy. The wine retains a great freshness. The attack is tasty, the wine is greedy and velvety. It presents a beautiful aromatic expression with lots of fruit and notes of cedar. Supple and silky, this Cheval Blanc offers great length, without having the density of very great vintages. This vintage which opened quickly is still today charming, greedy and gives a lot of pleasure when it has reached maturity. It beautifully expresses the synergy of concentrated and balanced Merlot with Cabernet Franc as always elegant and aromatic.
