The Story of White Musk
White musk originated in the shift from natural to synthetic materials in perfumery. Traditionally, musk was extracted from the glandular secretions of musk deer, a process that was both expensive and harmful to the animal population. Due to ethical and sustainability concerns, as well as the high cost, the late 19th century saw the advent of synthetic musk compounds.
The term "White Musk" was coined around this time to differentiate these synthetic molecules from their natural counterparts. Chemists developed these synthetic musks in the laboratory, aiming to replicate the desirable attributes of natural musk while eliminating harsher, animal odors. These synthetic versions retain the sensual, warm qualities of musk but exhibit a cleaner, purer scent profile.
